Housman was born on 26 March 1859 and educated at Bromsgrove School and St John's College Oxford (MA). He was a Higher Division Clerk in HM Patent Office from 1882 to 1892. He then became Professor of Latin at University College London, 1892-1911. In 1911 he was appointed Professor of Latin at Cambridge University and Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge.
